The results of the 5th Annual VT-WVU Houston Food Bank Challenge are in!
Hokies $2,800 - Mountaineers $1,185
Food Drive Total - $3,985
Congratulations, Hokies, on winning, the Food Bank Challenge for the third consecutive year! Once again, it was a tremendous success for the Hokies and the Mountaineers! The combined total was triple last years efforts!
Since many folks were out of town, we agreed to extend the challenge another week to collect additional donations via the mail. Many thanks to all of you for your generosity! We also thank the Mountaineer alumni for hosting this years challenge at the Fox & Hound Pub on Westheimer. By working together, we made a significant contribution to help people suffering from some of the recent tragedies that have struck our country.
Scott Stuckey, Houston Food Bank Representative, also came to thank the alumni for their donations, and snapped a few photos for their newsletter. (www.houstonfoodbank.org).
Special mention:
A very special thank you goes to Erroll Hines, Sports Events Chair North, for all his efforts
in coordinating this food drive with the Houston Food Bank.
Many thanks to Monica Basehore, Sports Events Chair South, for also making arrangements to extend the food drive to include the Hokies in South Houston.
The Hokie Bird was on the scene to rally the crowd! Thanks to Virginia Strickler for posing for a snapshot in Shelley Tyrees costume. See her photo and more on our website!
We also thank Pat Tyree for the photos and the great-looking posters!
Season of Relief report to date:
Total Donation Impact - $123,704
In addition to the WVU Challenge, our chapter has raised $930 dollars and 506 lbs. (or $754 dollars worth) of food this season. Our total cash donation so far is $4,918. This figure is converted to an impact amount based on the Food Banks ratio*, and then combined with the food donation yielding the grand total above.
* The Houston Food Bank can turn every $1 donated into $25 worth of food!
Way to go, Hokies! What a great effort! But were not done yet, the season is only half over! There are still 5 more games left before the ACC Championship, and our goal is to make it to the $125,000 mark by the end of the season!
The holidays are fast approaching. And for many of those families that have lost everything, displaced from their homes and jobs and starting over, imagine how bleak this holiday season will be. While youre out shopping, please remember to pick up some extra non-perishable food items to bring to the football gatherings at SROs, or mail your financial donations. Every can and every dollar counts!
Thank you, Hokies, for doing such a fantastic job in supporting your community!
